Making apple wood kitchen spatulas with Latvian patterns

A kitchen spatula set handcrafted from natural apple wood with engraved Latvian patterns. This project shows the complete process — from cutting the spatula shapes and careful sanding to adding decorative patterns and completing the wooden kitchen utensil set.

Natural apple wood kitchen spatulas – from a wood blank to a finished kitchen utensil
This project involved making a set of wooden kitchen spatulas from apple wood, combining the character of natural material, a practical form and Latvian decorative elements. I make every spatula individually, so the wood tone, grain and natural details differ from piece to piece.

Apple wood is particularly well suited to making small wooden kitchen utensils. It has a dense structure, beautiful warm tone and expressive wood texture. The natural variations in colour and grain make every spatula visually unique.

The work begins by selecting a suitable piece of apple wood and creating the spatula shape. The outline is marked on the blank, after which each kitchen spatula is cut from solid wood. At this stage it is important to preserve both the necessary strength and a comfortable handle shape so that the finished spatula is pleasant to use every day.

After cutting, careful finishing begins. The surface and edges are progressively sanded, removing saw marks and forming smooth, rounded shapes. Particular attention is paid to the handle and working section because a wooden kitchen utensil should be not only visually attractive but also comfortable in the hand.

One of the most characteristic details of this project is the Latvian patterns on the spatula handles. They give a simple kitchen object its own identity and turn it into a decorative Latvian kitchen interior feature. The patterns are carefully positioned on every part, maintaining a balance between the natural wood texture and the ornament.

The result is craftsmanship in Latvian wood — practical apple wood spatulas that reveal both the natural texture of the material and the making process itself. They are suitable for everyday kitchen use, while a wooden utensil set like this can also become a beautiful gift for people who appreciate natural materials, craftsmanship and Latvian design.

Unlike industrially manufactured identical kitchen utensils, solid-wood products preserve the character of the individual piece of wood. One spatula may be lighter, another may have a darker pattern or more pronounced grain. This is why handcrafted apple wood pieces cannot be reproduced exactly — every product develops its own appearance.

This project is another example of how natural wood found in Latvia can be used to make practical and attractive items for the home. At the VVWOOD workshop, we create different wooden products for the kitchen, home and gifts while trying to preserve as much of the material’s natural character as possible.
